emBodied Digital Creativity

This digital puppet that maps the wearer's actual body movements on to a virtual 3D avatar in real time provides a more realistic mapping that a Wiimote and a more effective interface for direct control of an avatar. Our research has shown that using this interface enhances a players identification with the avatar and provides a more expressive means for character control that traditional game controllers. This project is part of the NSF's Creavtive IT program and investigates the link between the cognitive science theory of common coding, and creativity.

WorkTop Image

SketchTop

SketchTop provides interdisciplinary design teams a shared interface for thinking about, illustrating, and iterating design ideas. After multiple rounds of prototyping and user testing, the final application takes off from the familiar act of sketching on paper and augments it using capabilities of the tabletop interface to enhance face-to-face collaboration. As part of the larger WorkTop project, future work will include extending the interface to incorporate remote users, and designing iterations of the interface to support problem based group-learning in K-12 STEM education.

The Interactive Narrative Remote Control provides a way for viewers to navigate a multi-linear narrative using a smart phone as an interface for choosing which path a character follows through the plot. The interaction metaphor of a slide puzzle illustrates the story as a set of pieces being slid in to place in the timeline of the narrative. As the story progresses, viewers can change their previous choices and immediately see the effect on the current scene.

Click on the circles to turn appliances on and off and see the total energy usage in the house change. For more details about the design process and the goals of the project, please see the design document

tunegreGATOR Image

tunegreGATOR

Unfortunately, this project is a bit broken at the moment.

tunegreGATOR is a music blog RSS reader that creates a playlist of mp3s linked from music blogs, displays the original blog post, and shows a list of YouTube videos related to the artist. The design of this web-app strives to streamline the music blog reading process, by making it possible to listen to music, read reviews, and find supplemental information all in one place. By creating a playlist of songs from unread posts, music discovery can also happen either passively, while browsing or working, or actively while catching up on the days music news.

Click on the items in the table to change the youTube feed and the blog post. Click the player to start the music.
